How It Works

Erbium:YAG Fractional laser, like CO2 carbon dioxide laser are powerful ablative lasers designed to remove the outer layers of the skin using a burst of energy. Laser Resurfacing, also known as a Laser Peel, has advantages over other methods of resurfacing. Some of these advantages include less bleeding, more precision with the ability to target tiny areas like moles, and most importantly, a shorter recovery time. Patients who have had Erbium laser treatment recover twice as quickly as those who have had CO2 laser.

The dramatic resurfacing results this laser treatment yields may last up to five years!

The Erbium Laser is a less aggressive counterpart to the more traditional CO2 Fraxel laser because it creates a beam more easily absorbed by water, which is abundantly present in the human body. Its efficacy is comparable to CO2 devices, but Erbium laser resurfacing causes less damage and can be used with more precision by physicians. These devices are known for minimal burning of the surrounding tissue as well as less severe and fewer side effects, and faster healing times. This makes the Erbium ablative laser resurfacing a better choice for patients with darker skin tones, who may experience discoloration with a CO2 laser.

The Procedure

A typical laser skin resurfacing treatment can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. An Erbium ablative or fractional laser emits a light that is capable of vaporizing or heating the superficial layers of skin and softening wrinkles and other blemishes. This process leads to the destruction of skin tissue and the natural regeneration of healthy skin cells and collagen production.

Patients have experienced safer treatments, fewer unwanted side effects, and significantly shorter healing time with our latest Xlase Plus Erbium:YAG laser than CO2 lasers.

Post Treatment

The treatment itself generally is well tolerated, however, heat usually starts to build up in the skin immediately following the procedure and the treated area may feel hot and sore much like moderate sunburn for 6-8 hrs. Redness of the skin will occur and may last between 1-3 days; make-up can be applied the following day if desired. The skin may feel dry and tight and very mild peeling may be experienced which can last for several days. Unlike traditional skin resurfacing, blistering and crusting does not usually occur following the procedure. Dryness of the skin is treated using a series of natural & healing skincare products. Our LED healing light Therapy treatment can be combined immediately and over the subsequent days to help with quicker recovery and more stimulation.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing Before and After Results

Patients will see great results with both ablative and non-ablative laser skin resurfacing, including improvements in skin texture and appearance, elasticity, and removal of unwanted skin blemishes and signs of aging. Patients may see some unsightly dark marks immediately following treatment, but these will disappear over the weeks following treatment.

Final results will show tighter skin, a smoother complexion, heavily reduced deep wrinkles, and the disappearance of fine lines and small wrinkles. With non-ablative skin resurfacing, patients may see a few years taken off their face while ablative skin resurfacing patients may experience a decade of age removed from their appearance.

Common Questions and Answers

  • The Erbium: YAG Fractional Laser Resurfacing has long been established as a safe and effective treatment for acne scars, traumatic scars, pigmentation, sun damage, melasma, enlarged pores, fine lines and uneven skin texture. The treatment is best suited to light to olive skin types. In some cases, darker skin types may be suitable for the treatment.

  • Yes, we require a patch-test at least 1 week prior to your treatment (even if you have had this treatment done previously elsewhere). The patch-test takes 10 minutes to do and can sometimes be done at your consultation appointment. We recommend stopping retinol 5 days prior and avoiding sun exposure 4 weeks prior patch-test.

  • For optimal results, most patients will require 1-3 sessions (approximately 1 session per month). In some circumstances, more sessions may be needed.

  • The results of this treatment are permanent. However, over time, concerns such as pores, pigmentation or fine lines may return. Thus you may benefit from doing Erbium: YAG Fractional laser again in the future.

  • The fractional technique is more suited to provide a refreshing and rejuvenating change with a much easier recovery period, usually a couple of days. In skin treatments, results are proportional to the amount or intensity of treatment, but so is the recovery time and potential complications.
