Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction uses targeted diode laser light to reduce the growth of unwanted hair over a planned course of sessions. At Skin Body Health Laser Clinic we treat the face and body from $70 per area, with your plan matched to your skin and hair at a consultation and patch test with Jade.

How laser hair reduction works

X-Lase Diode laser platform

Our diode laser directs gentle pulses of light at the hair, where the energy is absorbed by the follicle and converted to heat. Because hair grows in cycles, a planned series of sessions targets follicles at the right stage, which is why one visit is never the whole story.

  • A small patch is tested first so the settings can be matched to your skin and hair.
  • Most people describe a warm flick or light snap during each pulse.
  • Sessions are usually spaced several weeks apart, with the number confirmed at your consultation.

What to expect on the day

Your appointment starts with a skin and hair assessment so the diode laser can be set to suit you. The area is cleansed, a cooling step keeps you comfortable, and the handpiece is moved across the skin in measured passes.

  • You may notice mild warmth or redness for a short while afterwards, with little to no downtime for most people.
  • We ask you to avoid sun exposure and to follow the simple aftercare we explain.
  • Shaving between sessions is usually fine; waxing or plucking is not, as the follicle needs to stay intact.

Who laser hair reduction suits

Laser hair reduction is a considered option for people who want a planned end to ongoing shaving, waxing and plucking. A consultation and patch test are the clearest way to know whether it suits you:

  • People tired of the constant upkeep of unwanted facial or body hair
  • Those who prefer a structured, per-area plan over a one-off fix
  • Clients across Double Bay, Paddington, Bondi Junction and the wider eastern suburbs

Diode laser works well for a wide range of skin and hair types, and we assess yours before we begin. It may not suit certain skin or hair types, during pregnancy, or alongside some medications, which is why Jade reviews this with you first. This information is general only, and we share honest, accurate information rather than promising a specific result.

The medical-grade laser we use

Laser hair reduction is only as good as the technology behind it, which is why we invest in a medical-grade diode laser rather than the cheaper broadband devices found in many salons. Our clinic uses the X-Lase diode laser, a TGA and FDA approved platform built specifically for hair reduction across a wide range of skin types and tones.

  • 808nm diode wavelength. The 808 nanometre wavelength sits in the sweet spot for hair reduction: deep enough to reach the hair follicle, and strongly absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, so the energy is delivered where it is needed.
  • High melanin absorption. Compared with older machines and broadband IPL, this wavelength is absorbed far more efficiently by the pigment in the follicle, which allows precise, targeted energy with less scatter into the surrounding skin.
  • Vacuum-assisted handpiece. The applicator gently lifts and steadies the skin before each pulse, bringing the follicle closer to the light and helping most clients find the treatment comfortable.
  • Suited to more skin tones. A single, focused wavelength gives the clinician fine control over the settings, so treatment can be tailored to a wide range of skin types and tones, including deeper and olive skin, always assessed individually and with a patch test first.
  • Efficient over larger areas. A rapid repetition rate means larger areas such as legs or backs can be covered smoothly within a single visit.

Being medical-grade and TGA and FDA approved does not ensure any particular outcome, and individual results vary. It does mean the treatment is delivered with equipment built and regulated for the job, by a trained clinician who matches the settings to you.

The science behind diode laser hair reduction

Diode laser hair reduction works on a well-established principle of laser dermatology called selective photothermolysis, first described by Anderson and Parrish in the journal Science in 1983. In plain terms, a specific wavelength of light is chosen so that it is absorbed mainly by one target, in this case the pigment in the hair, while sparing the surrounding skin as much as possible.

  • Light converted to heat. The 808nm light is absorbed by the melanin inside the hair and its follicle and is converted to heat. That heat damages the follicle and reduces its ability to produce hair, which is why the result is described as permanent hair reduction rather than removal.
  • Working with the hair cycle. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser has the greatest effect on follicles in their active growth (anagen) phase. Because only a portion of your hair is in that phase at any one time, a planned course of sessions is needed to treat follicles as they cycle through.
  • Gradual, cumulative change. Across a course, many people notice regrowth becoming slower, lighter and finer. The change builds over time rather than appearing after a single visit.

We keep our language honest: laser reduces hair growth, it does not remove hair permanently, and how your skin and hair respond varies from person to person. Jade explains what is realistic for your skin and hair type before you begin.

Frequently asked

How many laser hair reduction sessions might I need?

It depends on the area, your hair and your skin. Because hair grows in cycles, most people work through a planned series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, often followed by occasional maintenance. Jade suggests a realistic plan at your consultation rather than a fixed promise.

Does laser hair reduction hurt?

Most people describe a warm flick or light snap with each pulse, and a cooling step helps keep you comfortable throughout. Sensation varies between individuals and by area. We test a small patch first and adjust the settings to suit you before treating the full area.

Is the hair gone for good?

Laser treatment reduces the growth of unwanted hair rather than removing it entirely, which is why we call it permanent hair reduction, not removal. Many people see a lasting reduction in regrowth and lighter, finer hair over their course, with results varying from person to person. We talk through realistic expectations before you start.

How do I book laser hair reduction at Skin Body Health Laser Clinic?

We work carefully, so request your skin consultation and patch test online, or call us on 0410 783 125. You can also email info@skinbodyhealthclinic.com. Jade then reviews your skin and hair and tailors a per-area plan to the areas you want treated.

Is the X-Lase diode laser suitable for darker or olive skin tones?

The 808nm diode wavelength, paired with a vacuum-assisted handpiece and adjustable settings, lets us tailor treatment to a wide range of skin types and tones, including olive and deeper skin. Suitability is always assessed individually, and we run a patch test first to see how your skin responds. Results and the number of sessions vary from person to person.

How is diode laser different from IPL hair removal?

IPL uses broadband light spread across many wavelengths, while our diode laser delivers a single, focused 808nm wavelength that is strongly absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. That focus lets the clinician direct energy more precisely to the follicle. Diode systems are widely used in clinics for hair reduction, and Jade will explain why it suits you and your hair at your consultation.

How should I prepare for a laser hair reduction session?

Shave the area the day before or on the day, since the follicle needs to stay intact beneath the skin. Avoid waxing, plucking or electrolysis for around four weeks beforehand, and avoid sun exposure and fake tan before and after each session. We talk you through simple aftercare, including sun protection, at your appointment.

Is laser hair reduction safe?

We use a TGA and FDA approved, medical-grade diode laser, operated by a trained clinician, and we always start with a patch test. Most clients find treatment comfortable with little to no downtime, though some short-lived warmth or redness afterwards is normal. As with any laser treatment there can be side effects, so Jade reviews your skin, health and any medications with you first. This is general information, not a promise of a particular result.
