The Procedure
Our latest NdYag laser uses long pulse (1064nm) making it suitable for most skin types, including darker skin as it has low melanin absorption. Our advanced X-lase system reduces the chances of unwanted side effects and is considered the best wavelength for vascular lesion treatments due to its high haemoglobin and porphyrin absorption giving it the ability to heat the unsightly blood vessel without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The energy from the laser is absorbed by the blood in the vein, converted into heat, and the vein walls are subsequently destroyed. In comparison with other wavelengths, which mainly affect the surface layers of a lesion, Nd:YAG light also targets the underlying vascular feeding system, which is important for ensuring the long-term efficacy of the treatment.
This process is perfectly safe as other healthy veins supply blood to the treated area and the body's immune system clears away the dead tissue just as with a bruise.
Background Information
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, thread veins, broken veins, surface veins or venous flares are small blood vessels that have become dilated near the surface of the skin. Spider veins are not varicose veins.
Thread veins and spider veins are commonly found on the face (around the nose, cheeks, and chin, more commonly known as rosacea) or the legs (Upper thigh, below the knee joint, and around the ankles). Usually very near the surface of the skin, red, blue, or purple in colour, and less than 1 to 2 mm in diameter.
They are not regarded as a serious medical condition but they can occasionally ache.
Thread veins can cause distress as the sufferer often feels self-conscious, particularly if the blemish is on an exposed part of the body, such as the legs.
Post treatment care
After the treatment it is quite safe to perform all daily activities. Certain precautions should be taken, these include:
- Avoid any drastic changes in temperature
- Do not keep touching or picking the treated area
- No sunbathing
- No saunas or steam rooms
- No exfoliation

How long will it take to recover from this treatment?
The whole treatment usually takes no longer than half an hour or so, depending on how many veins require treatment. You can normally drive immediately and go about your usual daily activities afterwards. Depending on your skin type (and the lesion being treated) some redness and swelling may be visible, but this usually subsides around 48 hours after treatment. Lesions may appear darker around 5 to 7 days later.
Is the treatment painful, and what are the risks?
A slight heat sensation may be experienced, however most people find it a relatively comfortable treatment. The vein and surrounding skin may look pink or red for a few days, and the veins may also appear a purplish or blueish colour before fading.
Will my veins come back?
Once the treated veins have shrunk completely they are unlikely to return, as they are broken down by thermo-coagulation. Up to 3 to 6 sessions every 4 to 6 weeks may be needed, depending on the severity of the veins and the surrounding skin condition.
Who should avoid this treatment?
This treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy, or for anyone with a pacemaker, adverse heart conditions, epilepsy, infectious skin conditions, those using anti-coagulants, or wearing fake tan. Iron supplements should be avoided while undertaking a treatment course. It is suitable for most skin types, and we will assess your suitability at your consultation.
Can I remove my spider veins at home?
Attempting to remove spider veins at home without proper guidance and supervision is generally not recommended. Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin, and removing them without the right knowledge and equipment can be risky and ineffective. If you are concerned about spider veins, it is best to consult with us so that we can evaluate your skin and assess your suitability for treatment.
